Kempinski Hotel Corvinus
Breathing new life into a landmark hotel
Budapest, Hungary

The vision
Kempinski Hotel Corvinus was the first internationally branded hotel to open in Budapest after Hungary re-gained its independence from Soviet Russia. It was a significant symbol of the city’s re-emergence onto the European stage but over time, the interiors had come to need reimagining and MKV was appointed to repurpose the public areas.

Spaces
A major re-planning exercise to achieve better use of the footprint, as well as volume, was required. The removal of a large, centrally located staircase up to the first floor function rooms was key, enabling the imposing lobby area to be opened up from the porte cohere through to reception and onto a second entrance on the opposite side the building. The lobby could then be transformed into a glowing expanse embellished with sculptural forms and patinas that echoed the elements of the glass roof above. A curvaceous staircase was introduced to one side sweeping up to the floor above where a chic new lounge was introduced overlooking the atrium that became the place for guests to see and be seen.
We also totally redesigned the restaurant to the rear of the atrium, creating a gasthaus ambience and bringing a homely change in tempo to the ground floor area. Required to function as the breakfast room for guests, the space could be partially closed down during the day to connect fully with the terrace and street onto which it opens.
